This training is for new and experienced social workers who want to explore the impact of racial injustices on children and adolescents. We know that many of the children are exposed to various sources of trauma related to race. We also know that black and brown children are disproportionately suspended and referred for special education services. As social workers working with this population these realities can not be overlooked.

Workshop Objectives:

Upon finishing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define historical trauma, racial trauma and microaggressions.
  • Identify the impact of historical and racial trauma on children and adolescents.
  • Discuss and identify the need to address racial injustices with children and adolescents.
  • Identify barriers that can limit the process of addressing racial injustices with children and adolescents.
  • Identify three interventions that can be used with children and adolescents to challenge racial injustices.

    • Introduction/Objectives 10 minutes
    • Breakout session 1- 15 minutes
    • Lecture- 1 hour
    • Breakout session 2-15 mins
