Federal update, September 2008: The
Social Work Reinvestment Act
See NASW and CSWA partnership at work on “youtube”
H.R. 5447, the Dorothy I Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work
Reinvestment Act, sponsored by Rep.Edolphus Towns (D-NY), is a bill which would
form a commission to study social work practice and report to Congress on where
there may be ways to improve retention rates and meet the anticipated increase
in the need for social workers in the coming years. A companion bill, S. 2858,
sponsored by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), has also been submitted. Please
encourage Congress to pass these bills putting social work in the spotlight.
These bills have also created an opportunity for partnership between the
[national] Clinical Social Work Association (CSWA) and the National Association
of Social Workers (NASW) in support of the whole profession, and the two
organizations have begun meeting to address concerns about the initial lack of
reference to clinical social work in the House bill.
NASW Executive Director Betsy Clark and CSWA Director for Government Relations
Laura Groshong met at NASW headquarters in downtown Washington, DC, in early
September, to discuss ways to work together and to develop a joint “youtube”
message in support of the Social Work Reinvestment Act.
The message
can be by clicking here.
